The Citizen TSUYOSA Shore NJ0238-57E is a limited-edition automatic watch built around a vintage idea — a journey back in time — rendered in a 40mm stainless steel case with a one-way rotating bezel. The dial is where it earns its name: a gradation black finish with a textured surface that runs from near-charcoal at the centre to deep black at the edges, so the watch reads differently depending on how the light falls.
Warm gold-coloured indices and a matching gold-tone bezel scale lift the whole face and give it a classic, slightly nostalgic character that the sportier TSUYOSA models don't have. Is the TSUYOSA Shore the same as the TSUYOSA 60?
No. The Shore NJ0238-57E uses Citizen's calibre 8210 with approximately 42 hours of power reserve, where the TSUYOSA 60 references run the newer calibre 8310 with 60 hours. The Shore is also a different watch in character: it adds a one-way rotating bezel, carries 100m water resistance rather than 50m, and is a limited edition of 12,000 pieces worldwide. If maximum power reserve matters most to you, the TSUYOSA 60 is the better choice; if you want the bezel, the water resistance and the vintage-inspired dial, this is it.
What does the rotating bezel on the TSUYOSA Shore do?
It's a one-way rotating timing bezel, the same mechanism used on dive watches. Align the marker on the bezel with the minute hand and you can read elapsed time directly off the scale — useful for anything from parking to cooking to a dive. It only turns anticlockwise by design, so an accidental knock can never make an elapsed time appear shorter than it actually is, which is the safety principle behind the one-way mechanism.
Can I swim with the Citizen TSUYOSA Shore?
Yes. It's rated to 10 bar, or 100 metres, which comfortably covers swimming and recreational water sports. Avoid operating the crown while the watch is submerged, and have the gaskets checked periodically if you swim in it regularly. It isn't an ISO-rated dive watch with a screw lock crown, so for scuba use we'd point you to Citizen's Promaster Diver range instead.
