Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the Squale 1521 Blue Ray and the other 1521 models?
The Blue Ray (ref. 1521PROFD.PB) shares the 1521's 42mm 316L steel case, 500m water resistance and Swiss automatic movement with every other model in the family — what changes is the finish and the face. This one has a polished case rather than the bead-blasted or DLC treatments, paired with a smoky blue gradient dial and a blue Italian leather strap. The polish is the deciding factor for most buyers: it reads dressier and catches light, where the blasted versions are matte and more tool-like.
Why is the crown at 4 o'clock on the Squale 1521?
It's a deliberate feature of the original 1521 case that Charles von Büren designed in the 1960s, not a styling quirk. Moving the screw-in crown down from 3 o'clock keeps it clear of the back of your hand, so it doesn't dig in when you flex your wrist — a meaningful comfort difference on a diver you wear all day. It also gives the case a cleaner, more symmetrical profile from the side.
Can you wear the Squale 1521 Blue Ray as a dress watch?
More easily than most dive watches. At 12.5mm it's genuinely slim for a 500m diver, the 48mm lug-to-lug keeps it compact, and the polished case with a gradient blue dial and Italian leather strap sits comfortably under a shirt cuff. The one thing to keep in mind is that the leather strap isn't made for immersion — the watch is rated to 500m, but if you're swimming or diving, fit a 20mm rubber strap and save the leather for dry wear.
