The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer HBJ004P brings back one of the most celebrated dial colours in watchmaking: the bright yellow of the Seiko “Pogue”. It is a men’s solar chronograph inspired by the yellow-dial Seiko 6139 that Colonel William Pogue wore on NASA’s Skylab 4 mission in 1973–74, a watch widely regarded as one of the first automatic chronographs in space.
Here that sunshine-yellow dial with contrasting accents sits under a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, framed by a tachymeter bezel with redesigned graduations and a colour-matched date window. The 41.4mm stainless steel case is 13mm thick with a 45.9mm lug-to-lug span, and it comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and push-button release.
Where the 1970s original ran on a mechanical automatic movement, the HBJ004 uses Seiko’s modern solar calibre V192. It charges from any light, runs for about six months on a full charge, and protects itself from overcharging. It times events to one-fifth of a second for up to 60 minutes, with a small seconds hand, a 24-hour hand and a power reserve indicator, and it is accurate to ±15 seconds a month.
Magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, 100m water resistance with a screw-down caseback, and LumiBrite on the hands and indices make it a heritage chronograph you can wear every day. It’s for the collector who knows the story, and for anyone who wants a watch with more character than another black or blue dial.
What we love about this watch: The HBJ004P has a better story than almost anything else at this price. An astronaut bought the original with his own money, wore it into orbit for 84 days, and turned a yellow Seiko into a collector’s legend. This version brings that dial back with sapphire, solar power and none of the vintage fragility, and it starts a conversation every time it’s on the wrist.
