The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer HBJ005 is a 145th Anniversary Limited Edition of just 8,000 pieces, marking nearly a century and a half since Seiko’s founding in Tokyo in 1881. Its dial is inspired by Edo purple, a traditional colour of Edo-period Tokyo, the city that became the capital where Seiko began. The shade is rich and deep, and it shifts with the light.
A bi-colour aluminium tachymeter bezel inspired by a vintage Speedtimer frames the dial, under a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The 41.4mm stainless steel case is 13mm thick with a 45.9mm lug-to-lug span. The screw-down caseback is marked LIMITED EDITION, and it comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and push-button release.
This anniversary edition belongs to Seiko’s third series of 145th-anniversary commemorative pieces and draws on Speedtimer chronograph designs of the 1960s and 70s. It runs on Seiko’s solar calibre V192, which charges from any light, runs for about six months on a full charge, and protects itself from overcharging.
It times events to one-fifth of a second for up to 60 minutes, with a small seconds hand, a 24-hour hand, a power reserve indicator and an accuracy of ±15 seconds a month. Magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, 100m water resistance and LumiBrite on the hands and indices make it a limited-edition Japanese chronograph you can actually wear rather than leave in a box. It’s for the Seiko collector marking a milestone, or anyone who wants a chronograph few others will be wearing.
What we love about this watch: Most limited editions change one detail and add a number. The HBJ005 has a reason to exist: a dial colour drawn from the city where Seiko was born, released for the brand’s 145th year. Purple is still rare on a steel sports chronograph, and with 8,000 pieces worldwide, this one won’t be on every wrist at the office.
