The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer HBJ003J is the most expressive of the new Speedtimer solar chronographs: a men’s sports watch with a green dial that brings richness without shouting.
The colour sits under a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, and the date window is colour-matched to the dial so the face stays uncluttered. A tachymeter bezel with redesigned graduations surrounds it. The 41.4mm stainless steel case is 13mm thick with a 45.9mm lug-to-lug span, and it comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and push-button release, weighing 168 grams.
Seiko’s Speedtimer name goes back to its racing and sports timing instruments of the 1960s, and the HBJ003 carries that lineage in a modern Japanese solar chronograph.
The calibre V192 runs on light, holds about six months of power when fully charged, and protects itself from overcharging. It times to one-fifth of a second for up to 60 minutes, with a small seconds hand, a 24-hour hand, a power reserve indicator and an accuracy of ±15 seconds a month. Magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, 100m water resistance with a screw-down caseback, and LumiBrite on the hands and indices make it a watch you can wear every day. It suits a navy blazer, an open collar or a weekend at the track.
