The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer HBJ002P is the darker, more understated of the new Speedtimer solar chronographs: a men’s sports watch dressed for the evening. Its anthracite dial has a brushed finish that catches the light, with tone-on-tone subdials and a date window colour-matched to the dial, so the face reads as one clean surface. A black tachymeter bezel with redesigned graduations frames it. The 41.4mm stainless steel case is 13mm thick with a 45.9mm lug-to-lug span, protected by a curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. It is finished on a stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and push-button release, and weighs 168 grams.
The Speedtimer name comes from Seiko’s timing instruments of the 1960s, and the HBJ002P brings that racing heritage into a modern solar chronograph. The calibre V192 draws its power from light and runs for about six months on a full charge. It times events to one-fifth of a second for up to 60 minutes, with a small seconds hand, a 24-hour hand and a power reserve indicator. Accuracy is ±15 seconds a month, magnetic resistance is 4,800 A/m, and water resistance is 100m with a screw-down caseback. LumiBrite on the hands and indices keeps it readable in low light. This anthracite dial chronograph pairs as naturally with a charcoal suit as with a weekend knit.
