The Citizen Promaster Fujitsubo NB6021-68L brings back one of Citizen’s most storied dive watches: the 1977 Challenge Diver. In 1983 a Challenge Diver washed up on a beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, its case crusted with barnacles after years at sea, and it was still running. Citizen named this modern tribute “Fujitsubo”, Japanese for barnacle, in honour of that watch.

The design stays true to the 1977 original: a 41mm case with the period’s wide, chunky hour markers, a “Mercedes”-tipped hour hand, a lollipop seconds hand and a rotating elapsed-time bezel with bold oversized numerals. The blue dial, vintage green lume and Super Titanium bracelet with safety fold-over clasp make it look as though it came from Citizen’s 1970s catalogue, built to today’s standards.

Underneath the retro styling, the engineering is entirely current. The case and bracelet are made from Citizen’s Super Titanium, which Citizen says is five times more scratch-resistant and 40% lighter than stainless steel. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial. Inside is Citizen’s Caliber 9051 automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve. It’s accurate to within -10 to +20 seconds a day and resists magnetic fields up to 16,000 A/m, so it holds up to phones, laptops and bag clasps.

Water resistance is 200m, and it’s ISO-compliant as a genuine dive watch. This automatic titanium dive watch suits collectors who value provenance, and divers who want a mechanical watch with a real story behind it. Citizen has been making watches in Japan since 1918, and the Fujitsubo is one of the most persuasive examples of that history.

After purchase and shipping by StarBuy, an email is sent by Citizen registering the warranty directly to the buyer. A link to the online instructions manual is also sent within the email. Citizen no longer supply any hard copies of the warranty booklet or the instructions manual.

  If no one is available to sign, Australia Post will leave a card with details on how to collect your parcel from the closest authorised Australia Post Office. You’ll need to present a photo ID at the post office to pick it up. If you’ve authorised a Safe Drop with Australia Post previously, they’ll follow your existing instructions.
