Citizen Promaster Fugu Dive Watches

CITIZEN PROMASTER FUGU 200m DIVERS WATCH

HISTORY

Based on the cult classic NY004 model that was released back in 1993 and adopted by the Italian Naval Special Forces unit, the current collection was released in 2018. Nicknamed Fugu, Japanese for Pufferfish. CASE & DIAL  The 3 Fugu models we received, feature a Stainless Steel case and Sapphire glass with a uni-directional bezel. The watch is 200m Water resistant with a rubber strap. The luminous hands are on the larger side and with cathedral style hands for more legible viewing underwater. The case itself has a matte finish and following in the footsteps of the original Ny004, the screw-lock crown is at the 8'o clock marker. The only difference from the original is that the crown is no longer grooved. It is now knurled. In our opinion, this makes for a better grip. The unique positino of the crown also adds to the classic status of the Fugu dive watch. On a functional level, it does not dig in quite as much if it were to maintain the position at the classic 3'o clock marker. The case back centre has the Fugu (Pufferfish) image lasered with the Citizen Promaster logo. NY0110-13E : Black dial with a Blue & Red Pepsi bezel NY0111-11E : Black dial with a Blue & Black Batman bezel NY0118-11A- White dial with Black bezel Case Diameter: 44mm Case Thickness: 13.1mm Lug Width: 20mm Lug to Lug: 50mm Approximate Weight: 105gm STRAP  The 3 Citizen Promaster Fugu models received by StarBuy all feature a Synthetic Rubber Strap with the NDL (No-Decompression Limit) imprinted on the band. The 2 variables printed on the band are DEPTH and the ND time.

MOVEMENT

The tried and tested Citizen Automatic caliber 8203. This non -hack caliber was released in 1977 and has stood the test of time.

PERSONAL IMPRESSION

This is a lot of watch for not a lot of money with my personal choice being the white dial NY0118-11A . The clean white dial really stands out against the black rubber strap and the black bezel. While not the most practical when diving, it really stands out for the desk divers. My ability to drown in ankle deep water has not permitted me to try this watch in the ocean. The bath with the rubber duck provided a good substitute. The crown was very easy to handle with wet hands.

Citizen have made a very good call with Sapphire glass for this series as against the mineral glass for the original NY004. The Day & Date functionality of caliber 8203 makes this a daily wear model.

This series is a must have for any collector and the hardest part would be deciding between the 3 colourways on offer. The black dial is the absolute ageless classic while the white dial is a stand out as there aren't too many models in the market with a similar dial. The white dial is not quite as white as the image will suggest.
