ALPINA Alpiner Extreme Automatic Review

Alpina has been synonymous with adventure-ready outdoor timepieces since its inception in 1883. The Alpiner Extreme Automatic, introduced in 2009, has embodied the brand's rugged, sporting philosophy. Alpina has now fully revamped this iconic timepiece, presenting a modernized version with a more compact case and striking enhancements. The new Alpiner Extreme Automatic line exudes a contemporary integrated sporting aesthetic, with rugged construction and intricate detailing.

Retaining the essence of the original model, the new series features a 41mm-wide by 42.5mm-long semi-integrated stainless steel cushion case, offering a more wearable aesthetic. The design is a lot more modern, layered, and faceted, reflecting Alpina's heritage. The brushed and polished bezel adorned with mountainous triangular motifs pays homage to Alpina's alpine heritage. Attention to detail is evident in the case sides, showcasing a mix of brushed, polished, chamfered, angled, and recessed surfaces. The crown, equipped with rubberized knurling, ensures easy operation, even with mountaineering gloves, while seamlessly integrating with the textured pattern of the rubber strap. Despite its smaller size, the watch's bold, squared-off form commands attention to the wrist and is suitable for a wider range of wrist sizes.

The Alpiner Extreme Automatic offers three dial colour options, each combining elegance with sporting practicality. The deeply textured dial surface, featuring a repeating triangular pattern, adds dimensionality to the design. Alpina's modern take on the alpha handset, paired with applied indices and a red triangular seconds hand, exudes refinement. Generous luminous material ensures legibility even in low light conditions. The black dial model offers a classic and versatile look, while the midnight blue dial option exudes sophistication. The green dial variant, with its masculine shades ranging from forest green to olive, adds a stylish touch, aligning with the adventurous outdoor spirit.

Powering the Alpiner Extreme Automatic line is the AL-525 automatic movement, boasting reliability and attractive finishing touches such as blued screws and an asymmetrical, black-coated winding rotor. With a 38-hour power reserve and a 28,800 beat rate, the movement ensures dependable performance. Each model comes with a dial-matching integrated rubber deployant strap, combining toughness with comfort and adding a luxurious feel with its raised grid texture pattern.

After over a decade since its introduction, the revitalized Alpiner Extreme Automatic series breathes new life into this iconic line, offering an outdoor-capable all-purpose sporting watch with a dynamic, modern integrated design. With its rugged construction, intricate detailing, and versatility, the Alpiner Extreme Automatic continues to embody Alpina's commitment to adventure and exploration. At an AUD RRP of $3295, this is a lot of watch for the money and represents great value.
