The navy dial has a velvety grained texture that shifts from deep blue to near-black as the light changes. Applied beige luminous indices give it a warm, vintage contrast, and a red-tipped seconds hand adds a single flash of colour.

The dial sits in a 40mm polished stainless steel case only 11.5mm thick, under a convex sapphire crystal, with an aviator motif on the caseback. It comes on a light brown calf leather strap with beige stitching, a combination of navy and tan that’s hard to get wrong.

Alpina’s AL-525 automatic calibre drives it, built on a La Joux-Perret base with 24 jewels, a 28,800 vibrations-per-hour beat and a generous 68-hour power reserve. It shows hours, minutes, seconds and a date at 6 o’clock, and is water resistant to 100 metres.

Alpina has been making Swiss watches since 1883, and this 40mm blue-dial automatic pilot watch with sapphire crystal translates its aviation roots into something that reads as smart as it does sporty. It sits naturally under a suit sleeve on Monday and with chinos and a knit on Saturday.

What we love about this watch: The navy Startimer Pilot AL-525NW4S36 is the pilot watch for men who don’t think of themselves as pilot-watch men. The blue dial and tan strap give it the polish of a dress watch, the lume and 100m water resistance keep it honest as a tool, and at 40mm it simply fits.

Ships in 1-3 Business Days from Sydney with Australia Post Express.
