His father, one of the first African American physicians, counted jazz legends like Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington among his patients—early influences on Dexter’s love for music. By age 15, Dexter mastered the clarinet and later transitioned to the saxophone at 17, an instrument that would cement his legacy.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gordon collaborated with iconic musicians, leaving an indelible mark on the jazz genre. Later in life, he explored acting, earning an Academy Award nomination for his role in the 1986 film Round Midnight.
